In August 2002, Mayor Shirley Franklin appointed
Linda DiSantis as the City Attorney for Atlanta. In this
capacity, she is the Chief Legal Officer for the City and
manages the Law Department. The Law Department is responsible
for handling all civil legal matters for the City and provides
legal services to the Mayor, City Council, and all departments
of City government.
Prior to becoming City Attorney, Linda DiSantis
was a Vice President and managing attorney in the United
Parcel Service Corporate Legal Department. As a member of the
UPS Legal Department management team, she managed the practice
group responsible for commercial litigation, real estate and
engineering issues, and environmental matters. In 1999, she
was responsible for creation of the UPS Core Counsel Network,
a network of law firms organized on a regional and substantive
basis that provides legal services to the company throughout
the United States. Linda served as the company’s principal
environmental attorney and is responsible for environmental
regulatory issues arising under RCRA, CERCLA, the Clean Air
Act, the Clean Water Act, and other federal and state laws,
and environmental litigation. Her area of practice also
included legal issues arising from the transportation of
hazardous materials.
In addition to her responsibilities in the
Corporate Legal Department, Linda served as the UPS Corporate
Compliance Manager and managed the Corporate Compliance
department. In 1995, Linda chaired the project team that
created the company’s Business Conduct and Compliance program.
She served as Chair of the Corporate Compliance Committee from
1996 until she left the company in 2001. In 2000, she was
given the additional responsibility of managing the Corporate
Compliance Department. This Department is responsible to
oversee the company’s business conduct and ethics initiatives
worldwide.
Linda is a frequent speaker on issues related to
legal department management, business conduct management and
ethics, and environmental law.
Prior to joining the UPS Legal Department, Linda
practiced with the law firm of Alston & Bird in Atlanta.
She is a summa cum laude graduate of the Georgia State
University College of Law. She currently serves on the
Legislative Advisory Committee of the International Municipal
Lawyers Association. She has served on numerous boards,
including the Georgia Advisory Board of the Trust for Public
Land, the Board of the Georgia Wildlife Federation, the
Environmental Advisory Committee of the National Chamber
Litigation Center, the Environmental Policy Committee of the
Metropolitan Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Executive
Committee of the Clean Air Campaign, and the Economic
Development Task Force of Governor Joe Frank Harris’ Growth
Strategies Commission. She has been a member of the Ethics
Officer Association. Linda has published articles on
environmental law, including an article in The
Environmental Forum, discussing environmental issues in
the context of e-commerce.
