The Future of Legal Education: Comparative Perspectives

Guidelines for Fieldwork (as of July 14, 2007)

Reimbursements.
-- In General.
Reimbursement can only be made after travel is completed and the student has returned to Atlanta. A number of different offices at GSU are involved in processing and approving travel expenses. Therefore, the amount of time to process reimbursements is unpredictable and students must be prepared to advance their own funds and pay credit card charges when they come due or carry the balance; interest on credit card accounts is not reimbursable. Forms and instructions for reimbursement will be posted on this web site by July 30.
-- Airfare. Students will be reimbursed for actual airfare expenses from Atlanta to the fieldwork site or sites (including necessary internal air flights in the foreign country) provided that the flight itinerary and cost for each ticket (including each internal flight segment) is approved in advance by Professor Cunningham. Reimbursement can only be made if original ticket receipt or a printed electronic ticket receipt is provided. Travel agency documents, itineraries, or confirmations from on-line agencies like Orbitz are not sufficient.
-- Accommodations. Students can be reimbursed for actual costs of accommodation that are directly related to active fieldwork up to $50/day up to a maximum of ten days. Original receipts must be provided.
-- Other costs. Students will not be reimbursed for any other costs incurred during or in relation to their fieldwork.

Requirements before departure
Students must provide to Professor Cunningham's assistant, Karen Butler, a copy of their passport, including a copy of any page containing a visa for the fieldwork country, and contact details for a person in the United States to be contacted in case of emergencies.
Students must submit to both Professor Cunningham and Karen Butler a detailed itinerary including flight details, your local accommodation address(es) if known, and contact information for persons at the fieldwork site who are hosting or providing substantial assistance. Attach to the itinerary email from such persons confirming that they have agreed to be available to you on the dates indicated in your itinerary.

Requirements during fieldwork
Please send email to Professor Cunningham and Karen Butler indicating:
1) arrival in the foreign country
2) arrival at and departure from each fieldwork site
3) imminent departure from the foreign country
4) arrival back in the US
5) any significant change from your flight schedule or fieldwork itinerary
