GJP is an unlikely mix of lawyers, social workers, and
a landscaping company. GJP defends people accused of crimes
and, win or lose we stand with our clients while they rebuild
their lives.
GJP programs include:
• |
Quality Legal Representation |
• |
Individual Counseling |
• |
Job Training and Employment |
• |
Addiction Counseling |
• |
Educational
Assistance | |
|
We believe this is the only way to break the cycle of
crime and poverty.GJP works only with
clients who have made a strong commitment to change
their lives.
|

Potential clients work with GJP's social worker
to create a contract that addresses the client's social
service needs. Expectations are set and enforced. The
client must fulfill his or her part of the contract for
the relationship to continue and to receive legal
representation. |
|
GJP visits clients in prison if they are
convicted and offers post-release support to those
clients. Also, GJP helps clients network with other
social service providers. The relationship between GJP
and the client is
contractual. | Some of GJP's
notable achievements of the past year
include:
• |
In February 2001, GJP's Board of Directors
authorized a $675,000 capital campaign to renovate an
historic building for our new headquarters. To-date our
organization has raised over $716,000 for the capital
campaign. Construction began in late October 2001 and we
moved into the renovated facility in February
2002. |
• |
In honor of founding GJP, Board Member John A.
Pickens, was granted the Chief Justice's Award for
Community Service at the Georgia Supreme Court in
September 2001. |
• |
GJP's latest recidivism study found that only
18.8% (compared with a national rate of 60%) of our 1996
clients were convicted of a crime after participation in
our program. |
|
Mission & History
GJP's mission is to ensure justice for the indigent
criminally accused and take a holistic approach to assist them
in establishing crime-free lives as productive citizens. GJP's
goal is to have a positive impact on the lives of individual
clients and their families, which in turn positively affects
the community by decreasing crime and violence. |
|
GJP's staff expansion over the last few years has had a
significant impact on both our ability to offer quality,
comprehensive service and on our ability to represent and work
with more clients. In 1998 GJP worked with 138 clients; by
2000 GJP had worked with 278 clients. In 2001, GJP served over
300 clients.
|
A Unique Approach
Why is Georgia Justice
Project Unique?
GJP is a holistic
legal ministry. The staff and volunteers assist
clients in all areas of their lives in addition to legal
representation. This includes counseling, employment, job
training, and education.
GJP is built on
relationships. Not a short-term patch, but a full-time
investment in the lives of our clients. The major difference
is caring.
|
|
GJP is innovative. There is no other
program like it in the country.
